Aloha!
Over break, 15 students traveled to Hawaii and toured the island of Oahu to explore a tropical ecosystem within the US, to learn about Polynesian food and culture, and to appreciate the historical significance of Pearl Harbor.
As a group we hiked Diamond Head Nation Monument and Monoa Falls, walked through Hoomaluhia Botanical Gardens to swim in Waimea Falls, toured the Dole Plantation to learn how crops like pineapple and bananas are grown and snorkeled Hanauma Bay to observe Pacific marine species in their natural habitat. We also visited Pearl Harbor and toured the USS Missouri Memorial and USS Bowfin Submarine and visited the USS Arizona Memorial after watching a historical documentary. On our last full day, we were able to visit the Polynesian Cultural Center. Separated into small villages that represent the 7 Polynesian islands, we were able to participate in traditional activities and observe cultural demonstrations and eat at a traditional luau.
